The Promise: Contemporary English Version Hardcover
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (August, 1995)
Author: Thomas Nelson Publishers
Average review score:

The Promise Lives Up To It's Name!!!
It's sad that many of the good translations that come along go out of print so quickly. This is my only complaint about The Promise which is such a wonderful read. This version makes Scripture not only readable, but applicable to daily living. What The Promise also manages to do is illustrate all of God's promises in the text with extra "mini articles" that accompany the Bible text. The CEV text is also supplemented with all the alternate readings possibilities-these appear on the bottom of each page. Also-SINGLE COLUMN FORMATTING makes this text read like a letter-which it actually is-a love letter from God to His people. The KJV translators stated that translation was the key to opening the kernal that is God's Word. No doubt that they would support any translation that clarifies and simplifies the Holy Scriptures. Hardliners beware-this version is easy to read, and that may lead more people to Christ. What's more important, exclusivity or leading more people to the Lord? I'll let God be the Judge. This version is awesome. Blessed reading!!!

Wonderful!
I recieved this Bible for Christmas two years ago and it's been GREAT! Very easy to understand. Too bad it is out of print, my mother would love it too!

Quicken 2003 For Dummies
Published in Paperback by For Dummies (17 September, 2002)
Author: Stephen L. Nelson
Average review score:

An Outstanding Reference
Answered all of my questions. Far superior to struggling with Intuit's opaque "Help" file. Gives great "How to" advice and leads you through a do-able set-up in a very capable piece of software which is - in my opinion - poorly explained in its own accompanying documentation. A real help.

Easy to understand and follow
This book is great. I needed a computer program to track my investments and my income and expenses for tax purposes. I bought Quicken but was dismayed at how hard it was to get going with the software. This book laid down the basics so that I could understand them, and got me into the sophisticated stuff such that I feel I'm getting the most out Quicken.

I'm tracking my investments. I can turn on Quicken and see right away how my investments are doing. My financial picture is finally in order thanks to this book and the advice it gave me.

The Rainbow People of God
Published in Paperback by Image Books (September, 1996)
Authors: Desmond Mpilo Tutu and Nelson Mandela
Average review score:

Outstanding collection of Tutu's antiapartheid efforts
The Rainbow People of God is a must-have anthology of Desmond Tutu's most motivating and inspiring letters, sermons and addresses between 1974 and 1994. John Allen (editor) includes some of Tutu's most memorable public addresses and skillfully weaves historical background information into the public addresses for the reader's benefit. This proves extremely helpful in painting an overall picture of the antiapartheid movement in South Africa. Anyone who has listened to Tutu speak understands that he often employs humor to illustrate the darkness and oppression caused by apartheid. Readers expecting such humor will enjoy complete satisfaction in this collection of Tutu's speeches. Through Tutu's voice, we learn how he successfully merged African and Christian philosophy to become one of the key players in defeating apartheid.

WOW!
Desmond Tutu is definately a man of God. His love, forgiveness and courage is set firmly in his belief of the Gospel. Through this book he clearly demonstrates the power that comes from a belief. The journals will inspire anybody.

Ready? Set Raymond! (Step into Reading. Step 1)
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (25 June, 2002)
Authors: Derek Anderson and Vaunda Micheaux Nelson
Average review score:

great even for those who can't read
My 19 month old loves this book (and has for the last three months with unwavering interest.) The words and pictures are so engaging. I sometimes read it to him three times in a row. He loves to identify all the people, things, and animals throughout the story. The illustrations are superb. We wish that there were more stories out there about Raymond. He's so likable!

I KNOW THE ILLUSTRATOR
This is a great, short and entertaining book for young children. My four year old son gets a kick out of how fast Raymond does everything(eats breakfast, brushes his teeth). Overall a very good intro for those kids just starting to read.

Red, White, and Green : The Maturing of Mexicanidad, 1940-1946
Published in Paperback by Texas Western Press (March, 1999)
Author: Michael Nelson Miller
Average review score:

refreshing and creative study that is long overdue
The field of modern Mexican history has been waiting for years for a book like this. Mexican culture is given its rightful place among the great cultures of the world in many pre-Columbia studies, but almost never treated fairly in the 20th century by political historians. This book would make a great text for a class in modern Mexican cultural history.

Thoughtful and engaging!
This is a bright, thoughtful and engaging book! Anyone interested in the culture of Mexico or the history of the Southwest will enjoy this historical perspective.

The Remarkable Exploits of Lancelot Biggs: Spaceman
Published in Paperback by Wildside Press (July, 1950)
Author: Nelson S. Bond
Average review score:

A book that influenced my writing career
I read this book when it was first published -- I think in a library copy. I was just a kid, and at that time hadn't really decided I would be a professional writer.

But I loved the book. I don't write this particular style, true, but I enjoy reading it. And I enjoyed it more as a kid.

As a budding writer, this book taught me the value of vivid characters who behave in a consistent manner.

I learned one of Robert A. Heinlein's rules from this book -- that what a writer is selling is entertainment. That your work competes for the book-buyers beer money. Later, when I saw R.A.H. articulate that rule, I understood what he was talking about.

For myself, I slowly hatched the ambition to grow up to give other people the kind of sheer, soul-satisfying, good READ that Nelson S. Bond gave to me. Of course, there were many other authors that contributed to that ambition, but you know what? I bought this book at a convention at a premium price in the 1970's - and I still have it on my treasure shelf.

As a professional reviewer and teacher of writing, I recommend this book for readers in the 10-16 age group -- and those mature enough to be able to enjoy a book aimed at younger readers without being embarrassed.

If you like Farscape, Stargate SG-1, and/or Star Trek's new ENTERPRISE -- you really should read this book. This is their source-material.

Parents should read this book with an idea to judging at what age their own children would be able to appreciate it. But they'll be asking you what you're laughing at, you'll be having such a howling good time reading.

This kind of writing is timeless and can appeal to readers of all ages, if they're mature enough to enjoy for the sake of enjoying. And this is the kind of book no home sf/f library should be without.

Live Long and Prosper,
Jacqueline Lichtenberg

Classic SF from the pulp magazines
He was the nicest, most helpful spaceman on the Venus cargo run . . . and just happened to be the biggest menace in all of space! A classic science fiction novel, originally published in science fiction pulp magazines in the 1950s. Still a lot of fun and better than much of what is being published today.

Riva: If Ya Wanna Look Good Honey, Your Feet Gotta Hurt
Published in Paperback by C & T Pub (December, 1998)
Authors: Ruth Reynolds and Annie Nelson
Average review score:

Brings new meaning to Baltimore Albums!
Fun, fun, fun! Is the quilt world's losing its girdle the 90's equivalent of burning its bra? That would add an interesting twist to the Woodstock quilt. Ruth's talent in cartooning and humor add so much to the world of quilting. Riva takes leaps beyond a book on piecing or applique- she provides us with content and inspiration- the essence of self expression. Many of us who know Ruth through Quiltart will agree- this one's a winner!

Riva is not just for quilters anymore!
There is nothing ordinary about Riva, alter ego of art quilter Ruth Reynolds! You'll have a constant grin on your face as you follow the flamboyant Riva and her girlfriends, portrayed in Reynolds' fabulous art quilts, cartoons and commentary, through the trials and tribulations of every-woman's daily life... Riva tells it like it is, honey... but like no other quilter ever has! You don't have to be a quilter to love Riva ...everyone will be amazed at Reynolds' creativity and sense of humor! I've been a Riva fan for several years and highly recommend her to everyone!
